What I Actually Use in My Home as a Designer

People often ask me, “Well, what would you use?” And honestly, it’s not all glamorous or Pinterest-perfect. My home isn’t perfect, yours doesn’t need to be either. It needs to work for your family—and that’s what good design should do 🤍

Here’s what I truly lean on day after day:

Durable rugs that can handle kids + real life
Yes, even with four kids running around, snacks flying, and the occasional spill… I invest in rugs that can take it. Pretty is great, but durability wins in a busy home. Rugs that are pretty and durable is the sweet spot. ;) See the rugs I have in my home here.

Less expensive accent tables
Furniture can be pricey, especially when starting from scratch. I recommend investing in quality pieces for the essentials, and for accent tables like coffee or end tables, you can find great options at box stores without breaking the bank. Here are some favorites from both my home and my clients’ spaces.

Storage that hides the mess
Baskets, bins, and clever nooks make a huge difference. Our home might look tidy, but the right storage is the secret weapon for managing life’s chaos. Depending on your living room layout, a larger storage cabinet can be a game-changer with young kids. Placing one behind your sofa or in the entryway are both great options for adding functional storage. I love all of these options.

Lamps over overhead lighting (always)
Soft, layered lighting makes a space feel cozy and lived-in. Overhead lights are functional, but lamps create the warmth that makes a house a home. So it’s good to have both. ;) I love winding down at night with only lamps on. It calms everything. See what lamps I have in my home here.

Pieces I truly love — not just what’s trendy
Trends come and go, but I invest in things that bring me joy every day. It’s a little luxury that actually matters. These are items I have and love in my home.

This is what real-life design looks like in my home: practical, beautiful, and functional for my family. These are the pieces that make my home feel like home. See what works for my family—and maybe find something that works for yours too. Take a peak! :)
